Professional Conduct and Records Keeping Course

Mandatory Continuing Education Activity for Psychotherapist's Permit Applicants

Dr Judith Norton, psychologist

One of the requirements for obtaining a psychotherapist’s permit for psychotherapists who are not members of a professional order is to successfully complete the OPQ’s course on professional conduct and records keeping.

The OPQ invites all psychotherapists who meet the requirements for recognition of acquired rights to take this course, as it will ensure that their permit is issued more quickly when the time comes.

Course contents

Professional conduct is the set of duties and obligations (towards the public, clients, and the profession) governing the conduct of a professional such as a psychotherapist. The aim of this course is to consider the code of ethics and its implications, as well as the consequences of the choices you make. Subjects such as professional secrecy, conflict of interest, and dangerousness will be discussed. As for record-keeping, the concepts discussed will be useful in your everyday practice, since the records you keep are the tool allowing you to attest to your professional activities. Accordingly, it is essential to know what to put in your records, why, when, and how.

Objectives of the course

1) To develop or maintain the necessary competencies in professional conduct and the regulatory framework of psychotherapy, as well as requirements for record-keeping.
2) To develop professional judgment regarding issues of professional conduct in psychotherapy.
3) To learn the requirements for the content, basis, and form of the notes and other reports kept in clients’ files.
4) To understand the concrete impact of these requirements on day-to-day practice.

Teaching methods

1) Presentation of contents through lectures
2) Workshop periods
3) Discussion and reflection with the trainer
4) Reading and written work between the two courses
5) Written examination
