Supervision of the Practice

Supervision of the Practice

The primary mission of the Ordre des psychologues du Québec is to ensure the protection of the public. The Order accomplishes that mission by supervising the practice of the profession of psychologist and by checking the competence of its members.  To this end, the Order has put together a Professional Inspection Committee, as obligated by the Quebec's Professional Code.

Professional Inspection

The Ordre des psychologues du Québec, through its Professional Inspection Committee, oversees the overall verification of the competence of psychologists or the verification of specific skills when circumstances justify it.   The professional inspection process encourages psychologists to maintain and develop their professional skills, thus providing the public with quality services that they are entitled to.

The General Inspection Program

Each year, the Order's Board of directors approves a professional inspection program based on the recommendations of the Professional Inspection Committee.  This program considers the evolution of the practice of psychology and its impact on the quality of the services provided to the public by psychologists.  Since it is not possible to supervise every psychologist, the inspection program provides targeting objectives considering, for example, the nature of professional activities, practice sectors of work environment, and then etablishes at random a sample of psychologist to visit.  A psychologist who is targetted by the anual inspection program may not be excluded from it unless he provides proof that he or she does not practice under the title of psychologist.  He or she may not the exempted based, for example, on his or her reputation, experience or by the restricted number of clients that he or she would service.  Psychologists who are selected by the annual inspection program are visited individually by an inspector.  The professional inspection process may enable the psychologist to :

  • reflect on their professional career;
  • take an overall look at their practice;
  • evaluate their professional skills;
  • be advised on how to improve their practice;
  • establish a personal continuous training program.

Special circumstances

The Professional Inspection Committee may decide to inspect a certain psychologist who isn't targetted by the annual inspection program based on information that put into question the skills linked to the practice of some professional activities.  This process may be launched following the report of an inspector or in response to an alleged infraction that was addressed to the Committee.  To proceed with this kind of inspection, the Committee appoints one of its inspector that may be accompanied by an expert if need be.

  1. les relations interpersonnelles;
  2. l’évaluation;
  3. l’intervention;
  4. la recherche;
  5. l’éthique et la déontologie;
  6. la consultation;
  7. la supervision.
