School

By interacting with the child, its parents and its educators, school psychologists can help treat and prevent several problematic situations experienced in and/or out of school. They work in schools to help students with personal problems or group related problems such as:

  • adjustment and learning problems;
  • attention and hyperactivity problems;
  • academic problems and loss of motivation;
  • family problems such as separation, divorce, grief and sickness, violent or aggressive behaviour;
  • lack of self-confidence;
  • lack of autonomy;
  • problems in establishing contact with others;
  • reactions to stress.

All school psychologists have either a master's degree or a doctorate in psychology. They have received specialized training to work with children in several fields: child and adolescent development; learning; motivation; intellectual and personality assessment; behavioural change; and psychotherapy.

The services provided by school psychologists are confidential and free of charge. All school psychologists are required to be members of the Ordre de psychologues du Québec. They may also be members of the Association Québécoise des Psychologues scolaires (AQPS).
