Some psychologists work for public and parapublic organizations : CLSCs, hospitals, educational institutions. Psychological services offered in public institutions have the advantage of being covered by the Régie de l'assurance maladie du Québec (RAMQ). Unfortunately, resources are often overstretched and unable to meet the demand. As a result, users may have to add their names to a sometimes long waiting list.
Psychologists also provide psychotherapy services in other public institutions (mental health facilities, penal institutions, etc.). However, their services are usually reserved for the clients of these establishments.
Here's how to proceed in order to gain access to mental health care in public and parapublic institutions.
You can get an appointement with a psychologist by calling or going to your local health and social services center.
It is also possible to see a psychologist at the outpatient clinic of your local hospital centre. A referral from a physician is usually required, so the first step is to speak to your physician.
Students attending an educational institution are often able to see psychologists who work for the school, college or university concerned. For more information, contact the school's administration or the college or university's student services office.
