In what areas do psychologists work?
A psychologist can choose to offer services in a particular area of practice.
Clinical psychology
Clinical psychologists provide psychotherapy to individuals or groups, most often in private practice or within the healthcare system. They can also diagnose mental disorders.
School psychology
School psychologists help children who are having problems in school due to personal or group issues. They work with students, parents and educators to identify barriers to learning and recommend appropriate changes.
Neuropsychology
Neuropsychologists study the links between the brain and behaviour. They diagnose neuropsychological disorders by assessing cognitive functions, including memory, attention and higher functions like organization and planning.
Work and organizational psychology
Work and organizational psychologists are involved in organizational change, staff selection and training, performance evaluation and employee assistance programs.
Teaching and research
Psychologists who work in a university psychology department are typically involved in teaching and research.
Health psychology
Health psychologists are interested in the behaviours and lifestyle habits that affect people’s physical and psychological health.
Psycholegal practice
Expert psychologists are called upon to testify in court and give their professional opinion on a particular case.
Social and community psychology
Social and community psychologists are interested in how the individual interacts with their social environment, and how communities and societies impact behaviour.
Family mediation
Family mediators work with divorcing couples to help resolve conflicts. Accreditation is required to offer this service, and Quebec’s Ministère de la Justice covers a portion of the fees for the parents.
