Where ca I find psychologial help ?

In a private office (for a fee paid by you or your insurance company)

The online search tool of the Ordre des psychologues can help you find a psychologist or a psychotherapist (in French).

Professionals are categorized according to the following criteria:

  • the problems they treat
  • the geographical area where they practice
  • the types of client they serve

The search tool will also tell you:

  • when they got their permit
  • what kind of mandate they accept (e.g., from the CNESST, IVAC, the SAAQ, or as an expert witness in court)
  • their theoretical approach

Your family doctor, or another health professional, can refer you to a professional.

Free consultations in the public network

CLSCs, hospitals and educational institutions generally offer free psychological services to users or students. To make an appointment, you must contact the institution where you want to have the consultation. Waiting periods may vary according to location and the problem for which you are seeking help. To find the health care institution where psychological help is available in your region, see the website of the Ministry of Health and Social Services.

Employee Assistance Programs

Some employers provide Employee Assistance Programs (EAPs) that enable employees to consult a psychologist or a psychotherapist free of charge for a certain number of sessions. Contact your EAP to get the names of the professionals who are available to help you.

University clinics (charging lower fees)

Universities who provide training in psychology usually offer clinical services to the public. These services are often less expensive than those of psychologists in private practice, but different conditions may apply. (For instance, the services may be provided by a Ph.D. student under the supervision of a psychologist).
